Artist Profile

Artist Statement

My work lives somewhere between realism and abstraction—a space where recognizable imagery meets color, movement, texture, and emotion. I work primarily with watercolor, acrylic, and ink, often allowing the materials to move freely before building back into the piece with more intentional marks and details.

Much of my work explores self-discovery, freedom, transformation, and the beauty that can exist within chaos. Faces, figures, animals, and elements of nature often become vehicles for those ideas, balancing moments of vulnerability with strength and movement.

I’m drawn to the contrast between control and unpredictability. Watercolor and ink naturally bleed, drip, and move beyond the boundaries I give them, while realistic elements bring structure back into the work. That push and pull has become an important part of my visual language.

Ultimately, I want my paintings to make someone feel something before they ever have to explain why. Each piece carries its own story, but I leave room for the viewer to find something of themselves within it.

Artist Bio

Jen Duran is a San Diego-based abstract-realist painter whose work combines watercolor, acrylic, ink, and mixed media to create expressive, layered imagery. After studying at Otis College of Art and Design, she developed an independent studio practice and has spent more than a decade exhibiting and selling her work throughout Southern California.

Her paintings range from intimate works on paper and canvas to large-scale statement pieces, often incorporating expressive washes, loose linework, drips, metallic details, and highly rendered elements. Her work explores themes of self-discovery, freedom, transformation, and authentic expression.

Jen regularly exhibits at juried art festivals and events throughout Southern California, while her original paintings and reproductions are collected beyond the region as well.

Although original fine art remains the heart of her practice, Jen’s creativity extends beyond traditional canvas. Her past projects include residential and commercial murals, hand-painted guitars, surfboards, shoes, a bicycle, and other unconventional surfaces. She is currently open to select commissions, murals, and custom art projects throughout the San Diego area.
